Over 220 people attended Paris 2012, the international fire sprinkler conference organised by the EFSN in association with the CNPP. Held on 28-29 June in the fully-sprinklered Paris Marriott Rive Gauche Hotel, the conference delegates received presentations from more than 25 speakers. The conference themes were the protection of life, property and the environment. There was also a focus on maintenance. As well as catching up on legislative developments, changes to standards, new product innovations and sprinkler-related research, the delegates took full advantage of the opportunity to network. Many also came to the optional gala dinner, which this year took the form of a private dinner cruise on the Seine.
The next international fire sprinkler conference will be held in London on 20-21 May, 2014. Our co-hosts will be the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association, which will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary. |

French media reports that a fire in an apartment building in an 18-storey apartment building in Roubaix, northern France, has killed one person and injured ten more. 250 people had to be evacuated and the building is now uninhabitable. The fire broke out at 14:45 on the first or second floor and then spread, reaching the top on one side. On that side a number of balconies collapsed. 100 firefighters attended and it took over two hours before the building was evacuated. Most of the residents will stay with their relatives but a quarter are being housed in hotels. There is no requirement to fit sprinklers in high-rise residential buildings in France and for commercial buildings the new requirement only applies to buildings higher than 200 metres.
