Spanish media report that a fire in a care home in Aravaca, an upmarket area in west Madrid, killed three elderly people and hospitalised 15 more of the 38 residents. The fire was reported at seven in the morning, when many residents would still have been asleep. Sprinklers are not required in care homes in Spain, yet they have been shown to reduce deaths from fire by over 80% for vulnerable people. In Europe the Nordic countries, Scotland and Wales already require sprinklers in care homes, while governments in England and Ireland have published proposals to mandate sprinklers.
