Italian media report that a fire on 29 August has destroyed Torre dei Moro, an 18-storey apartment building in Milan. The fire is claimed to have started in an apartment on the 15th floor whose occupants were away. The fire brigade was called at 17:36. It then reached the facade of the building, spreading up and down the entire building within 30 minutes. Fortunately all the occupants, of whom there were about 30 at the time, managed to escape. But their homes and belongings are gone, as are some pets. There is no requirement to fit sprinklers in residential buildings in Italy. Had this fire started on a lower floor at night when the building was fully occupied, it is possible that a similar tragedy to Grenfell could have occurred.
