Independent research funded by Research England has found that those in apartment buildings are twice as likely to die or be injured by fire as residents of houses. The researchers also found that 2.3% of fires in apartment buildings spread beyond the floor of origin, meaning compartmentation badly failed, and that when this happened the risk of fire death or injury doubled again. Sprinklers could help prevent the spread of fire and would also reduce smoke evolution and temperature, thereby reducing smoke pressure and spread. Full report.
