The British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association, BAFSA, has published a report on the retrofit of residential sprinkler system in 540 council homes in Sheffield. The work was commissioned by Sheffield City Council because escape routes were inadequate and it would have been more costly and difficult to address this issue through compartmentation. The homes had 1-3 bedrooms and were in several sites around Sheffield. The sprinkler systems cost £810,000. Another £341,450 was spent on building work.

Other councils in the UK are also retrofitting sprinklers in high-risk social housing. For example, Southwark Council in London has fitted sprinklers in 25 sheltered housing complexes, at a cost of £3,200,000. It will also fit sprinklers in 20 hostels.
