Local and international media report that a fire in a care home on 4 November in Tuzla killed 13 residents and injured over 30 more, including five firefighters and three police officers. Like most European countries, Bosnia-Herzegovina does not require sprinklers in care homes. Sprinklers are very effective at preventing fire deaths in these residences – they control the fire to the room of origin and cool smoke so that it contracts and no longer has overpressure to force its spread. NFPA data shows they reduce fire deaths in care homes by 85%. While sprinklers might not save someone frail who is in direct contact with a fire, they save others. Regulators are increasingly recognising the need for sprinklers in care homes and they are now required in the Nordic countries, Ireland and the UK.
