Elie van Strien, the Amsterdam Fire Chief, is calling on the mayor of Amsterdam to require sprinklers in underground car parks. They are currently not required and this makes them unnecessarily dangerous for fire-fighters in the event of a fire. As a result, the Amsterdam Fire Brigade will be reluctant to enter an underground car park if there is a fire other than to make a rescue. Van Strien hopes that his call will be echoed by other Fire Chiefs. In January a fire in a car park in Markenhoven filled the car park with smoke. The new fire-fighter communication system did not work in the concrete underground structure and the fire safety regulations took no account of the potential weakening of the structure by the fire. The Amsterdam Fire Brigade states that owners of car parks should now realise that they are at risk of greater losses from fire if they do not install fire protection systems.
