Spanish media report that the fire brigade was called at 01:26 on 25 May to a caf\u00e9 below a hotel in M\u00e1laga, Spain. From the caf\u00e9 the fire had spread readily through the unsprinklered wooden hotel. According to reports the building was a steel structure with cross-laminated timber. All firefighters in M\u00e1laga were reportedly called to the scene. As they searched the building to make sure everyone had evacuated (one guest was asleep and had to be woken), a floor gave way and a firefighter was hanging between the floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Spain hotels higher than 28m have to be fitted with sprinklers but this hotel was below that height. As yet there has not been much debate in Spain about wooden construction but according to the wood industry there are now over 600 wooden buildings in Spain. It is not clear if any of them have been protected with sprinklers. In other countries with a longer history of wooden construction such buildings are routinely sprinklered. This incident shows it is time for the fire safety of wooden construction to be addressed in Spain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
