The fire was reported at about 13:00 on 12 February. Had it occurred at night it is likely there would have been more deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Two guests jumped from the third storey onto some mattresses placed below but were injured as a result. The hotel has been closed by the fire brigade amid reports of inadequate fire safety measures. News reports claimed that the fire detection system was not working because of a lack of maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The six storey hotel was not protected with sprinklers because it is below the 28 m height threshold at which sprinklers are required in hotels in Spain.
