German media reports that eight fire-fighters were injured, two seriously, in a fire in a shopping street in Leverkusen. The fire was reported at 03:30 on 5th January in a ground floor shop unit. On breaking into the unit the fire-fighters were exposed to high heat and had to retreat. There was reported to be a resident trapped in one of the apartments above the shop. This person was rescued. The shop unit and apartments above were badly damaged. There was no report of the presence of sprinklers.
